IBMBA Student Activity
IBMBA 103 Kenting Trip
【by Amy Tsai】On November 22nd and 23rd, IBMBA 102 and 103 had a class trip to Kenting! This trip was initiated by 103 class leader, Simon Tsai. The main purpose was to enhance and improve the relationship among classmates and between the two promotions 102 and 103. Professor Sung, the mentor of IB 103 was very helpful in the organization of the trip; he also donated 5000 NT for the trip’s expenses. The trip was held just after midterm, giving students a good chance to relax themselves after some stressful examinations. With everyone expecting so much, IBMBA set off on Saturday morning to Kenting.
On Saturday morning, everyone went separately to Kenting. Few people drove there, some other rode motorcycles together all the way from Kaohsiung to Kenting. Everybody gathered at the Hostel at about 2pm. After checking-in, people got ready to enjoy the most beautiful beach in Kenting- Baisha Bay. Even though we have Sizihwan Bay back at school, the sand texture at Baisha Bay is quite different, also there are many offshore recreation activities that we don’t have at Sizihwan bay, like jet-ski. This nice place excited everyone. Some people ran into the sea by screaming happily, some soaked their feet in the waves, and some others had some beverages while chatting on the beach. Few even started wrestling in the sea. This was just a good chance to discover how crazy your classmates could be!
And then it came the most thrilling part of the day- the BBQ! Everyone was hungry after playing for a whole afternoon. It is worthwhile mentioning that Taiwanese barbecue was quite new to many foreign students, so Taiwanese students played an important role in teaching them how to deal with all the different type of foods served in the barbecue. At the same time, all of us enjoyed fireworks let off by some tourists. Those wonderful moments were like being on vacation in a foreign country. After the dinner, everybody enjoyed a cozy night sitting on the grass yard at the hostel, having little chatter and some beer, and it was the end of a wonderful day.
People woke up early on the second day to have more fun on Kenting’s beach. This day was even crazier than the previous one. For example, some students were building sand castle, some buried their classmates in the sand, and some were swimming in the sea, or playing beach volleyball. We took a lot of funny pictures to record the best moments. At noon, everyone had lunch at a seafood restaurant. After all, we couldn’t come to Kenting without having some sashimi. This was the last meal of the trip, because afterwards, we would have to say goodbye to this nice place and head back to Kaohsiung.
This trip was such a great moment, because graduate students seldom have free time. This could explain why all IB students were so enthusiastic in joining the trip and all the activities held in Kenting. We cherished the moment spent with each other. This was an amazing and unforgettable weekend, and IB students will always remember those sweet memories.

Internship Sharing Interview
Coca-Cola Summer Internship-Following Your Desire
IBMBA 102 Amy Lai
【Interviewed by Helen Lin】
1. Where did you do the internship? How did you get it? What made you want to have an internship there?
Internship is an opportunity which helps us to be familiar with the working environment before graduation. I wish I could adequately combine the management theories and the real work experience in order to discover my weaknesses and work for to correct them. Right after enrolling in the IBMBA program, I was start looking for internship opportunities. Also, I actively attended internship alumni’s sharing meetings which helped me a lot.
There are four main channels I used to search for internship: Taiwan University Internship Platform, NCTU Internship Program (CTIP), and NSYSU Internship Platform. Except for the official websites, these channels also have FB fan pages; be sure to use the FB function well and not missing any update. Generally speaking, summer internship program applications would be opened from late February. I collected all the internships’ information that I am interested in and put them in an excel file which allow me to easily follow the application deadline, the requirements and others.
People always say that “Learn the regulation in big enterprises and get experience in middle size companies. “As an IBMBA student, I always want to know more about a multinational company like Coca-Cola. I appreciate having got the chance to be an intern in the Operation department’s Time analysis project.
2. What is your duty there? Please describe
Taiwan Coca-Cola belongs to one of the five Swire group Asia business, it focus on channel marketing; including of Coca-Cola series product production and marketing. The Time Analysis project is a periodically project which investigates how much time the whole marketing process consumes, and makes a detailed report afterwards. The report aims to help the company making an efficient man power distribution and other policy adjustment. The Time Analysis project investigation is based on channel representatives’ daily routine. We take records of their working time, examining their working process and report to the company.
3. What did you learn from the job? What impressed you the most?
To collect the data, I followed the channel representatives to their responsible channels every day. (restaurants, entertainments, supermarkets, marts…etc.). Sales representatives in Coca-Cola have many targets to reach in their job. They have to meet the sales target, develop new channels, know the products displaying skills, price negotiation and other paper works management. Good sales representatives not only have market sense, problem solving ability, but also have strong negotiating ability. In this way, they can maintain good relationship with customers. During the process, I realized that beside the business knowledge, know how to deal with customers and satisfy their needs are the most important things. The good customer service is the biggest reason that makes the brand Coca-Cola to be always successful.
We use V-LOOK and Excel’s Pivot table to analyze the data. Although I learned statistics for a year, I had little knowledge of these two. Thanks for seniors’ help; I learnt how to analyze the data more accurately and quickly. During the internship period, I came to know that people in the different positions will have various points of view on the same thing. To achieve the win-win situation, the manager plays an important role in it.
4. Did you have any difficulties fit in the company or the job? (ex: the company culture, the people, the work content…)How did you overcome them?
In order to collect the data, I followed the sales representatives visiting customers every day. The weather is not always kind to us; it could be extremely hot, cloudy or rainy. Our schedule will not be changed because of the bad weather. Each sales take in charge many channels and areas- Taichung, Chang Hwa and Nantou. The beverage demand in summer is high especially in July in lunar calendar due to Chinese ghost festival. We were so busy and it was even impossible to distinguish whether one was on job time or not. The internship was a good simulation for a real working environment it gave me a chance to discover and correct my weaknesses. I will never forget how lucky I was to get this internship.
5. Anything you want to say about the internship and suggestions for others who want to have internship there.
Many people say that interns are just some “cheap workers” in the company. They complain about the companies and the way companies treat interns. I would like to say that everything depends on your “attitude.” You have to ponder about your motivations to do an internship before stepping into it. Be sure to prepare yourself well to face every situation in the company; from your outfit, your attitude to your work and the desire to learn. From my experience, colleagues are willing to help you as long as you show the right attitude and mindset. Big success is always accumulated by tiny things. (Special thanks to Alex who showed us Coca-Cola’s operational mode and organizational structure.)

IBMBA Graduate Exclusive Interview
George Shihyu Huang
【IBMBA100黃士育 George Shihyu Huang】
Do you remember the IBMBA logo? Do you know who designed the IBMBA banner which is hanging on the wall of the IBMBA study room?
The man is George Shihyu Huang, one of IB 101 alumna. After his graduation from NSYSU Department of Mechanical and electromechanical engineering, he worked in an educational institution. When he got a promotion to become a manager, he quitted the job. And he decided to come back to the business school to learn more about management skills. Therefore, IBMBA program was his first choice.
1. Why did you want to apply for the IBMBA program?
My major was Mechanical and electromechanical engineering, but after the practical experience, I thought I must learn some professional knowledge about business management. That’s why I applied in the IBMBA program. This English-taught program helped me to improve my English ability. Moreover, I learnt how to cohabit with classmates having different type of nationalities. This cross-culture environment influenced me deeply. Another reason which motivated my application in the IBMBA program was the possibility offered to study abroad. I should notice that since I was a kid, I have always dreamt to study abroad. The IBMBA’s overseas exchange programs provided me a chance to fulfil this dream.
2. What did you learn in IBMBA program?
I learn a lot in business management and interpersonal relationship. I think business management includes marketing, communication, organization and research methodology. Interpersonal relationship is related to the tolerance of different culture and cooperation with international talents. I’m very interested in marketing, I spent huge amount of time to study this subject. This is the reason my thesis topic was related to marketing. My suggestion to master students is they should not waste time, they must choose a favorite area, and focus on it. One day, they will become an expert in their area. I also want to mention that research methodology is the most important part for a master student. It would help them develop their critical thinking, and once they master it, it would help them planning their career life and they will be able to apply it on their working tasks.
3. Could you share your exchange experience with us?
I went to the exchange program during the 2012~2013 academic year. I applied Chuo universality in Tokyo. I enrolled in marketing, consumer, and economic course in their business school. This school provided us a lot of courses and activities. I was able to participate in the clubs, and in international students’ activities. I selected a Japanese-taught course for one semester. I then evaluated my Japanese level through a JLPT N1 (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. N1 means the highest level). In order to know more about the Japanese working style and environment, I participated in several job recruiting fair during my exchange program. It permitted me to get a part-time job there! For me, I learnt a lot form the exchange program. I believe that if you are more interactive with local people, you will even get more from the IBMBA’s exchange program.
4. Could you talk about your current job?
I am currently working for Delta Group, a big enterprise having diverse product lines. I am responsible for the total solution of automated production. For example, robotic arm and saving power plan. I used to only think about marketing as how to promote this product for example. But now I have more responsibilities such as the design, the production process and its application. My current tasks are totally different from what I learnt in MBA program. When you face that kind of situation, your first priority is to “learn fast”. My strategy is the following: having an engineering background, I would start from the application and then try to learn more about the product. Delta Group is a global company, employees could contribute through their talents and skills and also have chance to develop their career life in overseas.
5. Any suggestion for IBMBA students?
IBMBA program is probably not the best choice among those international MBA programs. But you must work hard. MBA degree is not only useful for a job career; it also helps students to build an international connection, and a strong academic learning experience as well. I can give the following suggestions:
1) While you are in Taiwan, focus on your talent or what you are interested in. (For example, marketing and strategy); cooperate with diverse nationality classmates.
2) During the exchange program period, obtain the limited requirement of credits. Then explore the local life and make some local friends.
3) Write your thesis seriously! Then you could build a strong critical thinking, it will make you able to overcome any tough situation in your future life.
4) Be an open minded person.

Enterprise Special
The Model of Sustainability---Everest Textile co., Ltd
A Brief introduction of Everest Textile co., Ltd:
Everest Textile Co., Ltd. (“Everest”) is a textile manufacturer, which headquarters is located in Shanshang District, Tainan City, Taiwan. The company was established in 1988, and was listed on Taiwan stock exchange in 1995 (symbol: 1460). The company specializes in research and development of textiles. The company meets their clients’ needs by sourcing and controlling materials, and by producing their products in-house. Everest states that their strengths are false-twisting yarn and eco-innovation which are integrated in their facilities and their fabrics. The company has approximately 3,000 employees globally. Everest has three production facilities; which are located in Taiwan, China and Thailand. The company manufactures products for well-known brands; such as Columbia Sportswear, Nike, The North Face, Puma, Hurley, and many others.
At the end of December, we went to visit Everest Textile co., Ltd. Mr. Tsai Jay-Yung, the HR manager of this company accepted our interview. The first eye shoot of this factory is an eco-pond with lotus and a goose, some wild mandarin ducks are swimming in it. The wall of this factory is full of climbing plants. Unlike other gray textile industrial buildings, this company has more “colorful” and “natural landscape”.
In the beginning, Mr. Tsai explained the construction of those buildings. During 2010, there was a big fire which completely destroyed the company. In order to re-build this factory, they invited NCKU Professor---Dr. Lin Hsien-Te, a specialist of green architecture, to design a new factory for them. Dr. Lin made it become an advanced eco factory. There is no air conditioner in this area. Because of this design, this company could save electric power around 68 million per year. We wonder how it works. How come they don’t use air conditioner but still can keep the temperature of the room cool? The answer is “Drencher system”!
They set up mega electric fans and drencher system on both sides of buildings. See following pictures:
However, they are not only pride of the achievement of environment protection. Mr. Tsai said, “We got certification of SA8000.” We all hear about “ISO standard” but what is “SA8000”? This is an auditable certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain, and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace. The full title of SA8000 is Social Accountability 8000 International standard. As it can be applied worldwide to any company in any industry, it is an extremely useful tool in measuring, comparing, and verifying social accountability in the workplace. Furthermore, Mr. Tsai indicated that recently, people starting to be more and more aware about the environment protection and labor right. It becomes a trend, and many international brandy companies are taking numerous policies in this way. The reason Everest Textile Co., Ltd. (“Everest”) is getting lot of orders from those famous brand is not only due to its quality but also due to its friendly attitude with the environment and its labors.
We asked him another question related to marketing. Most of Everest Textile Co., Ltd. (“Everest”)’s customers are international companies which only care about low price. However it might not be a genuine idea for Everest to always cost down and might still ending up getting low profit. How does Everest Textile Co., Ltd. (“Everest”) overcome this difficulty?
Mr. Tsai said the best way is to create their own brand. This is the reason, they have launched their own brand called “Ever Smile”, and they set up an exclusive shops in Taiwan. He said, “We use our know how to manufacture our own sports’ wear, such as outdoor sport clothes. The quality is comparable to the well-known sport wear’s brands, but it is 1/3 cheaper. ” One of the numerous reasons which motivated them to launch their own brand was to solve the textile over production problem. Textile is highly relative to fashionable trend, over production is hard to sold out. Create our own brand, will help us to reduce the huge amount of textile stocked in our different warehouses.
Mr. Tsai and the other HR specialist, Mr. Huang stayed with us for more than 3 hours. They explained carefully and treated us nicely. They showed us how do they recycle industrial waste and transform them into useful material. This interview was an opportunity for us to understand how local enterprises survive in the dramatic changing business world.
